Florida Billfish Masters Tournament
March 15th & 16th, 2008

  • Miami, FL
  • 28 Boats
  • 2nd Leg of the Contender Boats Libertad Challenge

The first day of the tournament had what seemed like less than ideal sailfishing conditions. Light SW winds and 90 degree temperatures didn’t slow down the fishing. The first day’s catch was 146 sailfish which was a 5 fish per boat average. Owl’s Nest was in the lead with 10 releases, Fish Tales with 9, Sandman with 8, Weez In The Keys with 8, Advanced Roofing with 8, and I am relieved to say we were in the hunt with 8. We definitely had a horse race with a lot of tough boats within reach.

Day two brought similar conditions with a light west wind. It was good fishing and incredibly close in the standings. With one hour to go in the tournament, SEVEN boats were tied with 13 releases. The Fish Tales with Capt Chris Zeilinski and owner Alex Vasquez were holding on to the lead. The Owl’s Nest with Capt. Matty Tambor and owner--- jumped in the lead with # 14. With 3 minutes to go, on our boat, Bill Danko hooked up. We waited anxiously for the second bite that would propel us in the lead. It never showed and Bill’s fish jumped us into 2nd place. The Fish Tales ended up in 3rd place. This was about as exciting as the finish of a south Florida sailfish tournament gets. This is the kind of finish that makes teams agonize over the difference that one of the fish that they lost during the tournament meant for them. This is the good stuff that keeps you coming back!

This is the second leg of the Contender Libertad Series, here are standings after two:

  1. Miss Britt I - 27
  2. 4 Aces - 25
  3. Rockstar - 23
  4. Advanced Roofing - 23
  5. Uptight - 22
  6. Miss Costa - 22
  7. Fish Tales - 17
  8. No Mercy - 16
  9. Weez in the Keys - 15
  10. Sandman - 15

Eleven teams won a total of $160,000, so it was a good day for many. Joe Neber threw a great dock party sponsored by Contender Boats. Please join us next year in what is always a good time on the dock and on the water. For information contact Dan Kipnis @ www.floridabillfish.com.
